Ride into Tanzania’s mountain country, where winding gravel roads pass small farms, busy villages and viewpoints that make you want to stop. In the Usambara Mountains, the riding is only part of the attraction. Pikipikis carry people and loads that have to be seen to be believed, and arriving on our BMWs often starts a conversation before we have taken our helmets off. This 11-day guided motorcycle tour starts and finishes in Moshi. We travel through the mountains to the Indian Ocean coast, visit Lake Chala on the Kenyan border and make our way around Mount Kilimanjaro before heading to the Ngorongoro Crater for a wildlife safari. There are several opportunities to see Mount Kilimanjaro along the route, although clear views depend on the weather. Approximately half the riding is on gravel and half on tar. The changing roads give practical meaning to the thinking behind Under Load and Inside the Helmet: observe what lies ahead, understand the motorcycle and make considered decisions. Intermediate riding experience is required, and we encourage everyone to ride within their ability. We travel as a small group, caring for our motorcycles and looking after one another. There is time for photographs, chapatis or samoosas at a local stop, and conversations with people we meet. Evenings bring a chance to freshen up, enjoy a drink and share the day’s stories over dinner.
